Rival teachers unions, knut and kuppet, differ over strike

Mr. Sossion, the Knut national chairman

The rivalry between the two teachers unions, Knut and kuppet, became even more evident yesterday when they split on whether or not to respect the industrial court's order which required the striking to report back to work with immediate effect.

Kuppet, which represents the post primary teachers and with a membership of close to 47,000 members, called off the strike giving the government a two weeks notice, a period they said negotiations should be going on. Kuppet's secretary general called on their members to report back to work.

Contrary to kuppet's decision, Knut which controls a giant membership of teachers, decided to defy the court order and asked it's members not to go back to class. they also threatened to boycott any negotiations should the government refuse to pay their allowances.

Knut members have remained defiant despite a warning from the Attorney General, warning them that their action will be met with 'full force of the law'.

on the other hand, TSC also directed all the school heads to take roll calls and forward the names of the absentees to its county directors for punitive measures.
