The Kenya Airways has, on Monday July 8th, said that its plane that made an emergency landing in Greece on Saturday has been denied clearance to leave Athens.

According to KQ, the departure was cancelled on Sunday by Greece authorities but it has sent another flight from Nairobi to bring home the 301 passengers who are still stranded in Athens.

Captain Muiruri was forced to make an emergency landing in Greece at 1am local time after smoke was sensed in one of its cargo holds. However, the flight made a safe landing and the crew led by Captain Muiruri have been applauded on the professional manner they handled the whole situation.

Part of the statement sent to newsrooms and signed by KQ's chief operating officer read, "This follows the denial of clearance by the Greece Civil Aviation in spite of approval by Kenya Civil Aviation Authority and the manufacturers, Boeing, for reasons yet to be officially communicated"

Initially, the plane was expected to land at JKIA at exactly 4:30am.
